Unlike some of my peers, I didn't truly plan to be where I am right now. Sure once I chose to major in Broadcast Journalism at Colorado State University, my path was clear. But there have been many twists and turns along the way that have now made this my dream job. After graduation from CSU, I was open to work just about anywhere. But then my grandmother got sick so I was left with only one option. I came home to Hawaii to take care of my "popo." But after six months of caring for her, I felt out of touch with the world, especially the newsroom. That's when my friend suggested I apply to be an associate producer at KGMB. Sure enough, I took the entry position at $6.50 an hour and never looked back. Fortunately for me, being in the news business felt as natural as riding a bike. It didn't take long for me to earn a full time position with benefits (possibly one of my dad's proudest moments).

Police chief explains Children's Theatre probe

The rally is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the newly named King Plaza in front of City Hall at 250 Hamilton Ave.

Ralph King, a member of the Friends, said Friday the rally is still planned despite the Police Department's Friday statement.

The theater was abruptly closed late in the afternoon of Jan. 24 and four full-time staff members were placed on administrative leave by City Manager Frank Benest.

The theater remained closed for four days but is operating again. Performances of "The Giver," scheduled to begin Feb. 1, have gone on as planned.

The temporary closure of the theater and placing four staff members, including longtime director Pat Briggs and longtime assistant director Michael Litfin, on administrative leave prompted significant concern in the community about what was happening.

Denzler: Caught off guard by a proud moment

It has been my finding that no matter how trying some parental decisions and moments may be, witnessing a smile on a child's face on Christmas morning, being given a hug, a firm handshake by a young adult as they leave for college or simply being told goodnight before another day comes to an end are great rewards.

With that in mind I wish to pass along a quote from Ecclesiastes: "Generations come and go but it makes no difference. The sun rises and sets and hurries around to rise again. The wind blows south and north, here and there. Twisting back and forth, getting nowhere. The rivers run into the sea but the sea is never full, and the water returns again to the rivers and flows again to the seas ... Everything is unutterably weary and tiresome. No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied; no matter how much we hear, we are not content, so I saw that there is nothing better for men than that they should be happy in their work.

Arroyo critics welcome Melo's appointment

Critics of President Arroyo on Saturday welcomed the appointment of retired Supreme Court associate justice Jose Melo as the new chairman of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Sen. Manuel Roxas II said he is confident that Melo "will uphold the same courage and professionalism when he issued the report on extrajudicial killings."

In 2006, Melo headed a fact-finding body created by President Arroyo known as the Melo Commission to investigate the cases of extrajudicial and political killings in the country.

Roxas noted that Melo's appointment was the result of "fruitful conversations" between the Arroyo administration and civil society groups.

He said he believes that Melo will implement reforms in the controversy-ridden COMELEC as well as play a key role in preparing for peaceful, honest and clean elections in 2010.

Broadfoot relishing glory bid

The Light Blues face Werder Bremen at Ibrox on Thursday in the first of four successive cup ties.

They host Hibernian in the Scottish Cup on Sunday and play Dundee United in the CIS Cup final a week later - with the second leg of their UEFA Cup clash against Bremen in between.

While Rangers are focusing on knock-out ties in the immediate future, the SPL remains their priority as they bid to stop Celtic winning a third successive title.

Broadfoot has been in the thick of the action in recent weeks after his appearances in the first team had threatened to run dry.

The Scotland B international had played only one SPL game before the end of January, but the sale of Alan Hutton has seen him reintroduced to the team at a crucial time.

"This time last year I was fighting a relegation battle," said Broadfoot.

Tiger Direct lists the Toshiba HD-A3 for $129.99

Even with all the recent announcements, HD-DVD is still selling 38% of the market, same as they've been doing the past several months. This fire sale could really make things interesting. All it needs to do is hang in another year. By then there'll be so many players out there the market will be too big to can no matter how well Blu Ray is doing. .
