Such is the case for copy-protection software vendor Macrovision, whose shares are down almost 37% since Dec. 6, the day before the company announced it would acquire Gemstar-TV Guide International for $2.8 billion, twice the market cap of Macrovision itself at the time. Clearly, some investors wonder whether the deal, which will saddle Macrovision with lots of debt, is a case of a company biting ... .

Buck & New Dawg: Would Javon Walker be a deal or a dud for the Cowboys ...
Devean George would lose money going to New Jersey. They have state taxes there. There are no state taxes in Texas. George had the hammer and used it. Fault the Mavericks for not getting the entire contract read before they made the deal. BUCK: NBA players whine about minutes. What now? NBA fans getting their feelings hurt over no-trade clauses. Like in the tango, it takes two to sign off on a no trade. You got this one right, Newy. Should the Cowboys use the franchise tag on Flozell Adams or roll the dice and let him become a free agent? NEW DAWG: Flozell played some of his best football against NFC East teams. You simply cant pay Tony Romo $67 million and not protect his blindside, using unproven players. They have no choice but to franchise Flo. BUCK: Lets see, Flo would be guaranteed $9 million in 2008.
Not-so-fine dining cited at many top restaurants
The data were used for stories published today, and were put online with a searchable interface so readers are able to examine restaurant records for themselves. The Union-Tribune database, which can be found at uniontrib.com/more/inspections, will be updated periodically. For the main print story, reporters focused on 103 restaurants that made the 2008 Zagat lists for San Diego's most popular and top food-rated eateries, and places where dinner for one is estimated to cost $55 or more. The Zagat San Diego ratings are based on surveys filled out by 2,500 customers and cover 472 eateries in the county. Zagat ratings are considered among the most democratic because they are composed of customers' experiences and not those of professional critics. Zagat restarted its San Diego edition in 2008, after a seven-year break.
All-paper voting bill has bipartisan face
It is a huge step forward," said Myriah Conroy, a plaintiff in the 2006 suit against then-Secretary of State Gigi Dennis. "It is really brave and courageous of the (legislative) leadership to bring this forth." But many county clerks call the paper-ballot proposal a step backward, predicting long lines and glitches on Election Day and delayed results. In fact, clerks nicknamed the measure the "Help Colorado Wait in Line Act." 'Chaos' predicted "There is going to be chaos," Mesa County Clerk Janice Rich said Tuesday. "Welcome to Florida 2008." The bill calls for voters statewide to cast paper ballots at polling sites for the August primary and November general elections, but also allows people to vote on touchscreen machines if they ask to. The measure has unprecedented support - the only bill this year to be co-sponsored by the top Republican and Democratic leaders of both chambers, according to Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver.
