Transcribing in Linux: Easy As 1, 2, 3...

I'm fairly sure that this is not open source software. My reasoning for stating this, since I have yet to see anything even close to Express Scribe, in the open source world as of yet. Much like MainActor is to those who want entry level software for decent video editing, I see Express Scribe as filling this same need, and perhaps even hitting a more important piece of the Linux puzzle.

iTALC promotes learning on a classroom network
iTALC, or Intelligent Teaching and Learning with Computers, is a didactical tool designed to assist teachers. Despite its name, the tool itself isn't a learning environment. It's meant to let teachers control their students' computers in a computer-driven classroom setting. Thanks to its powerful remote desktop control features, simple setup, and lack of cost, it's a potential remote assistance tool for any type of network.

Battle lines drawn over Kosovo

Hashim Thaci, the prime minister of the new state, knows as much. He said: "Everything is clear. We have massive recognition. Kosovo is an independent state – sovereign and democratic."It has left a bitter aftertaste in Serbia. Regional expert David Stewart-Howitt, a peacekeeper in Bosnia and now chairman of Castle European, an Edinburgh fund manager which invests heavily in the Balkans, says that while the carrot of EU membership is a powerful draw, the treatment of the Serbs has unnecessarily exacerbated resentment in the country."Most Serbs recognise that ultimately this is a disaster of their own making," he says, "but they are still incredibly angry about the fact that international law has been compromised to the needs of naked Realpolitik. "There's a real resentment of American unilateralism.

HD DVD camp implodes

The emerging story of CES so far is the seeming implosion of HD DVD.

After the defection of Warners to rival Blu-ray camp, the format – backed by Microsoft and Toshiba – is left with just Universal and Paramount as the only major studios to support the hi def disc.

The HD DVD camp turned a crisis into a disaster when it cancelled its scheduled press conference at the show and then – perhaps unsurprisingly – cancelled all media interviews at the show.

It's left observers with the impression that the HD DVD group is in disarray and on the verge of collapse.

Blu-ray, on the other hand, is only to eager to parade spokespeople talking up its own format.

Whatever happens next its clear that consumers are the ones who are suffering.

Light at the end of the nuclear deal tunnel

Electroplating and dyeing units have played havoc with the rivulet. The toxicity in it is affecting the river Sutlej also, to which it is connected. Unless the officials down the line are made personally responsible for its upkeep, they will continue to invent excuses for not stemming the deadly rot.

iMovie '08 Library Compressor 1.2

Like it or not, iMovie '08 is the future of iMovie. And, truth be told, I actually like it. Not in comparison to iMovie HD, but as an easy-to-use movie-making program, iMovie '08 is actually pretty good.

One useful feature of iMovie '08 is that, like iPhoto, it keeps a library of all your DV clips handy and available, regardless of which project you're currently editing, so you have to import each clip only once to make it available to any project. The downside of this approach is that your iMovie Events folder, which contains all your imported DV footage, can quickly grow to ginormous proportions—DV files are big .

One solution to this dilemma is Nik Friedman's iMovie '08 Library Compressor 1.2 ( ; free). This AppleScript-based utility uses the H.264 codec to compress the DV files in your iMovie Events folder; since iMovie '08 supports H.264 video, you can still use these smaller files in your projects.

U.S. reports first monthly decline in labor market since 2003

The Fed was likely to ease again at its next meeting in March, they said.

"If you're someone who spent the last six months saying this is Wall Street making a big deal out of nothing, you've got egg on your face this morning," said Robert Barbera, chief economist at ITG.

Sri Lanka

On November 28, two bombings attributed to the LTTE killed 18 civilians in Colombo.

The Karuna group, which has been aligned with government forces since breaking away from the LTTE in 2004, openly engaged in child recruitment, extortion, abductions for ransom, and political killings. Its expelled leader Colonel Karuna was arrested by UK immigration authorities in London in October.

Internal Displacement
Nearly 315,000 people, mostly Tamil and Muslim, have fled their homes in the north and east because of renewed hostilities. Currently over 200,000 remain displaced in the east; many have been displaced multiple times. Returning IDPs face regular threats and occasional violence, including abductions, by both the LTTE and pro-government armed groups.
