CES: LaCie unveils new hard drives, LCD display
LaCie on Monday introduced five new products including desktop and portable hard drives and a new LCD display aimed at professionals. Some products are available today; others are coming later this month and in February. The LaCie d2 Quadra is a redesigned quadruple-interface desktop hard drive. It features USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and external Serial ATA (eSATA) connections. Featuring a large surface area, the external drive dissipates heat without needing a fan. It's available now in capacities ranging from 320GB to 1 terabyte (TB), at prices starting at $189. The Little Big Disk Quadra is a quad-interface drive designed for portability. It's fast enough to handle video editing and digital content creation on the road, but sports an aluminum heat-sink design that cools without needing a fan.

I have to say I'd normally be very skeptical because I LOVE the movie, LOVE Gene Kelly and I have NO idea how they're going to pull off the amazing ballet. BUT, for some reason after reading through that I just have a good feeling about it. Harry Groener, Erin Dilly, Randy Skinner and the whole creative team, I really think they have a good chance at pulling this off. I'm really excited to see how it comes along and see what happens! re: THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED's (with Chad Allen in Hartford, CT) artwork Jan 23, 06:56:41 PM SO cute. Very eye-catching and sure to get some attention to the show. Wish I could see it! re: O'Hara's Debut Solo Album, featuring Connick, jr., released May 6 Jan 23, 06:45:32 PM SO thrilled for her! If I could pre-order now I would! Great Book, Not-So-Great Score...
MacBook Pro Penryn update imminent (updated)
Update: I really wish that Apple would have built Penryn into the MacBook Air, but George Ou speculates that Penryn was probably still an unknown quantity when the MBA was being designed many moons ago. Update 2: According to AI Penryn increases battery performance by as much as 16 percent and encoding operations by as much 40 percent. posted by Jason D. Ready for the World
Hard to believe the Big Apple could come as a letdown, but for at least one of the six students enrolled in the American University in Cairo (AUC) course Writing on the Road: Discovering America, the Manhattan skyline apparently fell short of her expectations. The students were, in a sense, pioneers — not only was it their first visit to the United States, but the January 2007 Journalism 299 course was also AUC's first effort to send Egyptians to study in a country that sends so many students to the Cairo campus. .
Good blog for info on Austin's local bars:
Now our planners want to spend billions more, mostly on projects for which tolls will only pay a small fraction of the cost. The draft long-range road plan which will be up for public comment in February and March calls for spending more than $1.5 billion (with a "b") on road projects in the Barton Springs watershed alone. The Envision Central Texas survey shows overwhelming consensus from rural, suburban, and urban residents for the kind of "careful planning" you seem to want. Whether, when, and how tolls are involved are important questions, but disagreements on tolling should not confuse the question of which projects support and which harm the future we want for our region. Sincerely, Bill Bunch Save Our Springs Alliance A Tough Decision Dear Editor, I have not heard the toll road issue so well put ["Page Two," Jan.
Discovery May Increase Treatment Options For Inherited Metabolic ...
The study was published online February 5 in the February 2008 edition (Volume 6, Issue 2) of the journal PLoS Biology. The research team found that the hypertension drugs diltiazem and verapamil increased the overall function of mutant lysosomal enzymes associated with the conditions Gaucher disease, fN-mannosidosis, and type IIIA mucopolysaccharidosis in patient-derived cell lines. The drugs worked by reprogramming the innate protein homeostasis machinery of the cell to repair the mutant enzymes. These findings may be especially significant for patients with lysosomal storage diseases affecting the brain, for which there is currently no effective treatment. "Our study shows that these two widely prescribed calcium channel blockers restore partial enzyme homeostasis in cell lines derived from patients suffering from several lysosomal storage diseases," said team leader Jeffery Kelly, who is Lita Annenberg Hazen Professor of Chemistry, Dean of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies, and member of the Skaggs Institute of Chemical Biology at Scripps Research.
